Summerfall

September feels like coming home to me. The warm comforting arm of autumn as she starts to spread her cloak of green, gold and copper from every tree. In the hedges are strung bright jewels of fruits, berries and nuts, summer sun caught in their sweet tastes. It’s no longer summer, nor autumn but a liminal time which I call summerfall, between them both where magic and wonder abounds everywhere you look. Even though we are over halfway through the year, it always feels full of promise with new ideas and anticipation.

Summerfall is here, bright boughs of berries, sloe blue, hawthorn red. The old man’s beard is gathering pace, creeping and unfurling his snowy tendrils.

Crab apples sit hard and tart, wisely awaiting more rain.

But the blackberries cannot wait and are feeding the bees, butterflies and midnight moths. Sweet and plump with sunlight sugars, they came home to purple a crumble.

A small anvil found, its blacksmith absent, searching for more to rhythmically hammer and feast.

And the unseen wasps magically engineering elaborate homes from such humble fruits. Never seen entering or leaving only text books tell.

A baked land this year, hard ground, hard living in the wild. But the confetti hedges of spring have provided, to fatten all in beautiful summerfall.

The first leaves are falling, tired from summers work. At the Equinox or Mabon once again the world will be in equal day and light and brief balance restored. This is the harvest party to say farewell to summer. Time to celebrate the abundance around that started with the blossoms back in the early Spring. Celebrate too any abundance you have asked to come into your life. A state of gratitude opens your heart and allows more love and abundance to come flooding in.

We are now entering the dark time of the year, as the daylight slowly fades towards the Winter Solstice. However it is at this time of year when deprived of light we can see our own inner illumination shining bright. Always listen to the intuition and wisdom that come from within, trust your inner journey. It’s path is as important as your your outer one and they are deeply entwined.

Go out and harvest fruits for jams and jellies making sure to leave enough for the wildlife. The winter migrants are arriving, look for redwings and winter geese and swans. The swallows and martins are preparing for their return to South Africa, wish them well on their flight with a promise they will return to herald summer. Enjoy this magical time in the warm fading days of summer.

Time to spend the last warm days outside crafting and thinking about what jobs need to be done in the garden. Go out in the wilds and enjoy the land settling down to prepare for winter sleep. The first falling leaf you catch you can make a wish on.

Septembers moon is the Harvest moon, huge and golden.
